Gardenia arrived like a dream—out of nowhere. I imagined landing on Earth as an alien, plopped from a spaceship onto a cotton tree branch. The world is wild, yet harmonious. I see it with a child’s naive invincibility and the wisdom of another world. The sun flares my skin, the wind cools it. My breath follows rustling leaves. Grass cuts my legs; rocks scorch my feet. As I begin to understand, I blend in—skin like soil, hair twisting like roots, shimmering like sunlit waves, dancing with the grass in the wind. The world is my garden, my mind gardenia.
